The Global Gazetteer is a file of over 2,500,000 place names throughout the world enriched with additional geographic and demographic data. Personally, I can't make heads or tails of it.
U.S. Gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server and obtain census data from the 1990 Census Lookup server. You can search for places, counties or MCDs by entering the name and state abbreviation (optional), or 5-digit zip code.
50 States has maps of every single state and many of the capitols.
*Capitals.com -- look at this one! It is oh so easy to use, and the map of each country also includes information on population, weather, government, etc.
Color Landform Atlas of the United States has current maps, black and white maps, and maps from (for reasons unknown to me) 1895.
The Geostationary Satellite Server provides real-time images of the earth from on high.
Now this is a very cool site. The Historic and Cultural Atlas Resource has heaps of just the kind of map that look good tacked on to your next school report, including maps of the journeys of Louis and Clark, the Louisiana Purchase, Sea Peoples of the late Bronze Age, the Roman Empire during various stages of its development, maps of Viking routes, and more. A lot of the maps require the shock-wave plugin, though.
The Perry-Casteneda Library Map Collection from the University of Texas offers about 1,500 maps online, and they cover the entire world. As with any graphics-heavy site, this one is slow loading, but well worth the wait.
Sitemap generator - AutoMapit.com features a new breed of "maps" - maps for website navigation
The Tiger Map Service will produce general maps for specific United States locales. Be warned, though ... it's pretty slow going.
Twisters.com gives you live weather maps, updated every 60 seconds. Pretty neat I must say.
